Pituitary Gland

As the Pituitary Gland is refered to several times throughout this site I thought I would give a brief description to enlighten readers as to its involvement in the production of Growth Hormone.

The pituitary gland is situated at the base of the skull and is attached to the Hypothalamus by nerve fibers. (it’s ok there’s no exam after!). It is no larger than the size of a pea. Referred to as the master gland as it controls several other glands in the body

There are three parts which are the anterior, intermediate and posterior lobes. They are all responsible for producing different hormones but it is the  anterior lobe which is responsible for the production of Growth hormone.

Hormones send messages from one cell to another through the blood stream. Growth hormone is normally produced while we are asleep.

The pituitary gland can be encouraged to produce growth hormone with the use of growth hormone releasers.
